The Producer
Can Sumoi is a dedicated, high-altitude natural wine project in the Serra de Les Mont样es (Penedès), co-founded by Pepe Raventós (of the legendary Raventós i Blanc family) and his childhood friend Francesc Escala. Perched 600 meters above sea level on limestone soils, the estate centers around a restored 16th-century farmhouse and ancient, dry-farmed vineyards. Can Sumoi was created to protect the local environment, recover old native grape varieties, and make pure, authentic wines without chemical intervention. In the cellar, winemaking is strictly low-intervention: spontaneous fermentations with wild yeasts, no industrial additives, no fining or filtration, and zero added sulfur.

The Wine
"Montónega Ancestral" is a crisp, electric natural sparkling wine (pétillant naturel) made from Montónega, an ancient, rare variant of Parellada that thrives in the high-elevation, wind-swept plots of Can Sumoi. Hand-harvested and gently pressed, the juice begins spontaneous wild yeast fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Before the natural sugars are fully consumed, the wine is bottled under crown cap to finish fermentation inside the bottle (ancestral method), capturing a fine, delicate bubble naturally. Bottled zero-zero without disgorgement, sulfur, or filtration, the 2024 vintage captures mountain freshness and Mediterranean brightness; it masterfully pairs a vibrant nose of orchard fruits, lemon peel, and spring blossoms with a razor-sharp, saline acidity and a bone-dry, mouthwatering finish.

What is natural wine?

Natural wine is wine made with minimal intervention from the winemaker, using organically or biodynamically grown grapes and without the addition of chemicals or additives such as sulfites. The result is a wine that is unique, expressive, and often has a more complex and nuanced flavor profile than conventional wines. Natural wine is also often associated with sustainable and ethical farming practices, making it a popular choice for those interested in environmentally friendly and socially responsible products.
