The Producer
Fabio Gea is an iconic, highly eccentric natural winemaker operating a tiny estate in Barbaresco, Piedmont. A former geologist, Gea left the corporate world to restore his grandfather’s ancient, hand-built vineyards and cellar. Working with extremely small yields, he farms organically and shapes every aspect of production by hand. Gea is famous for inventing and crafting his own custom aging vessels, including handmade porcelain amphorae, stoneware pots, and toilet-shaped ceramic jars. His winemaking philosophy is ultra-minimalist: spontaneous wild-yeast fermentations, no mechanical pumping, no fining, no filtration, and minimal to zero added sulfur, producing wildly unique, soul-stirring wines with immense personality.
The Wine
"Pinotto" is Fabio Gea’s raw, high-vibrational expression of Dolcetto, sourced from old vines planted on the limestone-rich slopes around Alba. Rather than making a heavy or over-extracted style, Gea treats the grape with a gentle touch: hand-harvested fruit undergoes spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts in custom porcelain and stoneware vessels to preserve pure, crunchy fruit and delicate floral aromatics. Bottled completely unfiltered and zero-zero, the 2023 vintage offers an extraordinarily vibrant core of dark berries, dark chocolate undertones, and lifting acidity, framed by soft, rustic tannins and a pristine, mineral-driven finish.

What is natural wine?
Natural wine is wine made with minimal intervention from the winemaker, using organically or biodynamically grown grapes and without the addition of chemicals or additives such as sulfites. The result is a wine that is unique, expressive, and often has a more complex and nuanced flavor profile than conventional wines. Natural wine is also often associated with sustainable and ethical farming practices, making it a popular choice for those interested in environmentally friendly and socially responsible products.
