The Producer
Matteo Furlani is a highly respected, fourth-generation winemaker who has become an authoritative pioneer of high-altitude natural winemaking in Trentino. His tiny estate, Cantina Furlani, is situated on the steep, dramatic slopes of the Vigolo Vattaro plateau, high above the city of Trento. Farming several plots of ancient vines hanging up to 700+ meters above sea level, Matteo rejects modern chemical agriculture in favor of strict biodynamic practices to preserve the raw vitality of his soils. In the cellar, Matteo relies on traditional, non-interventionist methods passed down by his grandfather: using native wild yeasts, avoiding temperature control, avoiding oak to preserve pure mountain minerality, and bottling entirely zero-zero—unfiltered, unfined, and with absolutely no added sulfur.

The Wine
The 2024 "Altopiano Rosso" (literally meaning "High Plateau Red") is a brilliantly electric, light-footed alpine red wine designed for effortless drinkability and crisp mountain freshness. This cuvée is built on a blend of Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir) alongside ancient indigenous Trentino varieties Negrara and Marzemino. Sourced from high-altitude vines rooted in stony, calcium-rich limestone soils, the hand-picked fruit undergoes a short, gentle infusion-style maceration in stainless steel to extract a translucent, light ruby hue while keeping the tannins incredibly soft and fluid. Fermented spontaneously with native yeasts and aged briefly on its fine lees over the cool alpine winter, it is bottled completely zero-zero. The 2024 vintage is incredibly vibrant and scannable; it masterfully pairs an expressive bouquet of tart forest berries and mountain herbs with a piercing, mouthwatering acidity and a clean, mineral-driven finish that is absolutely sublime when served chilled.

What is natural wine?

Natural wine is wine made with minimal intervention from the winemaker, using organically or biodynamically grown grapes and without the addition of chemicals or additives such as sulfites. The result is a wine that is unique, expressive, and often has a more complex and nuanced flavor profile than conventional wines. Natural wine is also often associated with sustainable and ethical farming practices, making it a popular choice for those interested in environmentally friendly and socially responsible products.
