The Producer
Il Farneto is a low-intervention, certified biodynamic estate located in the rolling foothills of Reggio Emilia in Emilia-Romagna, founded in the 1990s by Marco Bertoni. Surrounded by dense woodlands and managed as a polycultural farm, the 8-hectare estate focuses exclusively on cultivating indigenous, climate-resilient grape varieties in clay-chalk and alluvial soils. Bertoni operates with total commitment to natural viticulture and cellar practices: no synthetic inputs in the vineyard, spontaneous fermentations powered solely by wild yeasts, zero temperature manipulation, aging in neutral steel or concrete, no fining or filtration, and zero added sulfur.

The Wine
"Giandon" Rosato is Il Farneto’s bone-dry, savory natural rosé, crafted from a field blend of dark-skinned native varieties Malbo Gentile and Marzemino. The hand-harvested grapes are destemmed and undergo a short, spontaneous maceration on the skins in stainless steel and cement vats just long enough to extract a striking cranberry-pink hue and delicate structural tannins. After resting on its fine lees, the wine is bottled completely raw—unfined, unfiltered, and strictly zero-zero with no added sulfites. The 2023 vintage bursts with tart red berries, citrus zest, and wild herbal undertones, backed by a driving natural acidity and a clean, saline finish.

What is natural wine?

Natural wine is wine made with minimal intervention from the winemaker, using organically or biodynamically grown grapes and without the addition of chemicals or additives such as sulfites. The result is a wine that is unique, expressive, and often has a more complex and nuanced flavor profile than conventional wines. Natural wine is also often associated with sustainable and ethical farming practices, making it a popular choice for those interested in environmentally friendly and socially responsible products.
