Region: Barbaresco (Treiso), Piedmont, Italy
Grapes: Nebbiolo
Body: Full
Notes: The 2001 is the more structured, age-worthy sibling to the 2000. Deep and brooding — dark cherry, plum, tobacco, cedar, dried roses, tar. Noble tannins that have softened beautifully with 23 years in bottle. Long, spicy, mineral finish. 2001 was an outstanding Piedmont vintage. 92 pts average.
Pairing: Braised short ribs, truffle pasta, ossobuco, aged Parmigiano, roast game.
Additional Info: Same vineyard and estate as the 2000 above — Valeirano in Treiso, 7.4 acres at 380 meters on clay-limestone marl of marine origin, southwest exposure, vines now averaging 55 years. The 2001 vintage is considered one of the great modern Piedmont years — warmer and riper than 2000, producing wines of exceptional concentration and aging potential. Same vinification: 14-15 days maceration, malolactic and aging in French oak (20% new), 20-22 months in barrel, 6 months in bottle. La Spinetta also released a Riserva Valeirano from the 2001 vintage in magnums — approximately 300 produced, aged at least 10 years before release. These old-vintage Spinettas are increasingly rare on the market and represent a window into peak-maturity Barbaresco from a legendary estate.

What is natural wine?
Natural wine is wine made with minimal intervention from the winemaker, using organically or biodynamically grown grapes and without the addition of chemicals or additives such as sulfites. The result is a wine that is unique, expressive, and often has a more complex and nuanced flavor profile than conventional wines. Natural wine is also often associated with sustainable and ethical farming practices, making it a popular choice for those interested in environmentally friendly and socially responsible products.
