The Producer
Le Coste is a benchmark, ultra-cult natural wine estate in Gradoli, overlooking the volcanic basin of Lake Bolsena in northern Lazio, founded by Gianmarco Antonuzi and Clementine Bouveron. Steeped in Burgundian winemaking discipline before returning to Gianmarco's native soil, the pair farms around 14 hectares of wild, polycultural, biodynamic land planted with ancient local grape varieties. In their subterranean cellar, the ethos is uncompromisingly "zero-zero": spontaneous fermentations with ambient yeasts, zero oak manipulation, long lees contact, no adjustments, no fining, no filtration, and zero added sulfur.

The Wine
"Pizzicante" Bianco is Le Coste's iconic, rustic ancestral-method (Pét-Nat) skin-contact sparkling expression. Sourced from dry-farmed old vines of Moscato Giallo and Procanico rooted in iron-rich volcanic ash and dark clay, the hand-harvested grapes undergo a short, spontaneous maceration on the skins to extract a vibrant golden hue and rich phenolic grip. The wine finishes its fermentation naturally in the bottle under crown cap to capture its wild, creamy fizz. Released unfiltered without disgorgement or added sulfites, the 2022 vintage offers a mouth-watering combination of floral aromatics, volcanic salinity, and a pleasantly bitter citrus edge.

What is natural wine?

Natural wine is wine made with minimal intervention from the winemaker, using organically or biodynamically grown grapes and without the addition of chemicals or additives such as sulfites. The result is a wine that is unique, expressive, and often has a more complex and nuanced flavor profile than conventional wines. Natural wine is also often associated with sustainable and ethical farming practices, making it a popular choice for those interested in environmentally friendly and socially responsible products.
