Low Life Barrelhouse is a highly creative, boundary-pushing hybrid brewery and urban winery located in the heart of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Founded in 2019, the project operates at the intersection of old-world fermentation traditions and modern, low-intervention techniques. Low Life carefully sources its organic wine grapes from top-tier independent growers in Ontario's Niagara Peninsula and the Blue Mountains near Lake Huron. By transporting cold-harvested, pristine fruit to their Winnipeg cellars, they bring a completely fresh perspective to Canadian viticulture. Their cellar ethos mirrors strict natural winemaking guidelines: relying entirely on wild, native yeast fermentations, skipping industrial fining or filtration, and working with exceptionally low sulfite additions to retain the electric, raw vitality of the fruit.
The 2024 "Blooms" Orange Wine is a masterfully executed skin-contact blend engineered to reveal the deep textural limits of aromatic cool-climate varieties. This vintage co-ferments a high-toned assemblage of Riesling and Vidal grapes. The hand-harvested grapes are left to macerate on their skins, a meticulous extraction method that infuses the juice with a stunning, hazy amber glow and a complex web of phenolic compounds. The resulting palate structure is beautifully dense and round, carrying the complex, tea-like skin tannins typical of skin-fermented whites while retaining a lively, mouthwatering streak of natural acidity. Bottled unfiltered with a mere 14 mg/L of total sulfites, this highly scannable orange wine opens with an expansive bouquet of floral aromatics, shifting into a structured, dry finish that proves urban winemaking can compete on a world-class scale.

What is natural wine?
Natural wine is wine made with minimal intervention from the winemaker, using organically or biodynamically grown grapes and without the addition of chemicals or additives such as sulfites. The result is a wine that is unique, expressive, and often has a more complex and nuanced flavor profile than conventional wines. Natural wine is also often associated with sustainable and ethical farming practices, making it a popular choice for those interested in environmentally friendly and socially responsible products.
