Grapes: Mataòssu (Lumassina)
Body: Light
Notes: Lean, bracing, and tangy. Wild herbs, sea-breeze florals, ripe pear, stone minerality, saline finish. Windswept coastal white — calamari's soulmate.
Pairing: Fried calamari, fresh seafood, fritto misto, artichokes, anchovies.
Additional Info: Punta Crena is a tiny family estate in the village of Varigotti on the Ligurian coast, where the Ruffino family has farmed terraced hillside vineyards for over 500 years. The Mataòssu vines date back to 1930, facing the sea within 1,200 meters of the water. This grape once reigned in the zone but was gradually abandoned due to its difficult vegetative balance — Punta Crena is one of the only producers still working with it. Run by four siblings (Tommaso, Paolo, Anna, Nicola), the estate uses ancestral stone terracing built by hand and farms entirely without synthetic inputs. The wine is Paolo's personal favorite for its finesse and elegant texture. Imported by Kermit Lynch.

What is natural wine?
Natural wine is wine made with minimal intervention from the winemaker, using organically or biodynamically grown grapes and without the addition of chemicals or additives such as sulfites. The result is a wine that is unique, expressive, and often has a more complex and nuanced flavor profile than conventional wines. Natural wine is also often associated with sustainable and ethical farming practices, making it a popular choice for those interested in environmentally friendly and socially responsible products.
