Region: Mendocino County, California
Grapes: 100% Nero d'Avola
Body: Light
Notes: Deep salmon and wildly aromatic. Blood orange, dried cherry, rose hip, and a savory, herbal edge with a dry, textured, mineral finish. Sicilian soul in a California field — and it works beautifully.
Pairing: Grilled octopus, tuna crudo, roasted eggplant, cured meats, or anything with Mediterranean flavor and heat.

Martha Stoumen Nero d'Avola Rosato is one of the most unexpected and exciting rosés in California's natural wine scene — a single-varietal rosé from Nero d'Avola, the great red grape of Sicily, grown in Mendocino County by Martha Stoumen's network of organically farmed vineyard partners. Nero d'Avola is rarely grown outside Sicily, and even more rarely made into a rosé in California — but Martha's instinct for unconventional varieties and her deep understanding of texture and acidity make this wine completely compelling. Brief skin contact extracts the grape's characteristic deep color and aromatic intensity before pressing, followed by native yeast fermentation in neutral vessels and bottling unfined and unfiltered. The result is a rosé with real personality — fuller in color and more savory in character than your average pink, with the kind of food affinity that makes it disappear fast at the table.

What is natural wine?

Natural wine is wine made with minimal intervention from the winemaker, using organically or biodynamically grown grapes and without the addition of chemicals or additives such as sulfites. The result is a wine that is unique, expressive, and often has a more complex and nuanced flavor profile than conventional wines. Natural wine is also often associated with sustainable and ethical farming practices, making it a popular choice for those interested in environmentally friendly and socially responsible products.
