The Producer
Weingut Diwald is a pioneering organic estate located in Grossriedenthal in the Wagram region of Lower Austria. Founded by Hans and Paula Diwald in the late 1970s—a time when organic viticulture was virtually unheard of in Austria—the estate was early to adopt sustainable, low-intervention methods. Today, the winery is run by their son Martin Diwald, who continues the family tradition with a minimal-intervention approach. The vineyards are planted on deep, wind-blown löss soils, which give the wines their signature texture and minerality. In the cellar, Martin relies entirely on spontaneous wild-yeast fermentations, no heavy manipulation, and minimal sulfur additions.

The Wine
"Vom Löss" translates to "from the loess," paying direct homage to the mineral-rich, yellow soil that defines the Wagram terroir. Sourced from organically farmed Zweigelt vines, the hand-harvested grapes undergo spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and neutral large Austrian oak casks. Martin Diwald focuses on capturing the fresh, crunchy side of Zweigelt rather than an over-extracted, heavy profile. The 2023 vintage offers bright red and dark stone fruits backed by subtle pepper and earthy tones, framed by a lively acidity and soft, approachable tannins.

What is natural wine?

Natural wine is wine made with minimal intervention from the winemaker, using organically or biodynamically grown grapes and without the addition of chemicals or additives such as sulfites. The result is a wine that is unique, expressive, and often has a more complex and nuanced flavor profile than conventional wines. Natural wine is also often associated with sustainable and ethical farming practices, making it a popular choice for those interested in environmentally friendly and socially responsible products.
